Here's something I've been on a hunt for since I've started collecting jerseys. I came across this one a few days ago and stoked to have it in my possession. Posted here is an authentic Chicago Bulls Dennis Rodman jersey made by Mitchell & Ness. Recently, a bulk of my posts have been shortened, but since The Worm is my favourite player of all time - I figure he deserves an in-depth article.
The body is made of mesh material with triple layered tackle twill letters and numbers. The bottom corner of the shirts sports the jock tag in which this particular style was worn by the team.
Dennis Keith Rodman was born on 13 May 1961 in Trenton, NJ and would later grow up in Dallas, TX. An unexpected growth spurt after high school would would land him a scholarship to Cooke County, but would then transfer and play with the Southeastern Oklahoma State College Savages between 1983-86.
The Detroit Pistons selected Dennis Rodman with the 27th overall pick in the NBA Draft. While in Detroit, he'd make a name for himself with the Bad Boys and capture back-to-back NBA Championships [1989, 1990], back-to-back NBA Defensive Player of the Year Awards [1990, 1991], back-to-back rebounding titles [18.7 RPG in 1992, 18.3 RPG 1993], and five selections to the All-Defensive First Team. He also played in NBA All-Star Games in 1990 and 1992.
Between 1993-95, he played for the San Antonio Spurs and grew into the character we've all loved to hate by adopting the colourful persona with dyed hair, piercings, and tattoos. He was able to assist the team in making the post-season while capturing back-to-back rebounding titles [17.3RPG in 1994, 16.9 RPG in 1995] and a selection to the All-Defensive Team [1994].
Before the 1995 season, Dennis Rodman was traded to the Chicago Bulls and the league saw dominance as he'd join Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan set a still unbroken record of 72 regular season victories. In his first two years in The Windy City, he received two selections to the All-Defensive First Team [1995, 1996] and two straight NBA rebounding titles [14.9 in 1996, 16.1 in 1997]. He also helped in winning the back-to-back NBA Championships. During Game 6 of The 1996 NBA Finals against the Seattle Supersonics, he tied a record of 11 offensive rebounds. In The 1997 NBA Finals, the Chicago Bulls took the series against the Utah Jazz 4-2, where he'd capture his fourth NBA championship.
In the 1997-98 season, his last year with Chicago, he would capture his seventh and final rebound title and help the Bulls to another trip to The Finals against their last year's opponents; the Utah Jazz. His defensive efforts would be a huge factor in taking the series 4-2.
Chicago won their sixth title [a second 3-peat performance] and a fifth championship for himself.
The next season, many players of the dynasty Bulls were either traded, free agents, or retired. Dennis Rodman was released before the start of the shortened 1999 season and later sign with the Los Angeles Lakers. He spent a total of 23 games with them before being released.
He played very briefly in his hometown with the Dallas Mavericks before also being released after playing 12 games. After a few years playing in overseas and independent organizations, Dennis Rodman officially retired from the game in 2005.
On 1 April 2011, twenty-five years after his professional debut, the Detroit Pistons honoured him by retiring the #10 jersey.
On 4 April 2011, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame by his Chicago Bulls head coach; Phil Jackson.
In a career spanning 14 years, he played a total of 911 regular season games, he averaged 7.1 PPG, 13.1 RPG and shot 52.1% from the field. In 169 playoff games, he averaged 6.4 PPG, 9.9 RPG, and shot 49% from the field.
