Toronto Maple Leafs x Frank Mahovlich [1967 - 1970]

Slowly rebuilding my jersey hoarding, this one particular piece barely cost me anything - except time for that matter. Today's jersey entry is Frank Mahovlich of the Toronto Maple Leafs. One of the greatest left wingers of all time, it seemed like a natural selection to own this jersey. This was the style they wore en route to their 1967 Stanley Cup Championship.


This jersey was picked up in a trade and the numbers were a birthday gift from my coworker. I chose to go with The Big M because you never see too many of them around. Other players in mind were Dave Keon, Johnny Bower, Tim Horton, and Terry Sawchuk.
This style was first introduced for the 1967 playoffs and remained on the front until 1970. It was revived onto the uniforms as the third jersey for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2011.


Shortly after acquiring the jersey, I picked up this custom New Era fitted that goes perfectly well with the colours.


Born in Timmins, ON, Francis William Mahovlich officially joined the Toronto Maple Leafs for the 1957-1958 season scoring 20 goals and 16 assists for a 36 point rookie campaign and earning him the Calder Trophy as the NHL's best rookie. Next season in 1959, he made his first All-Star Game appearance.
In 1961, he led the league in scoring and set a Maple Leafs franchise record with 48 goals - an accomplishment which stood for 21 years. He finished the regular season with 84 points.


In the 1961-62 season, already an offensive threat, he helped take the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Stanley Cup Finals. Pitted against the Chicago Blackhawks, Toronto took the series 4-2. Frank Mahovlich would score 12 points in that postseason with 6 goals and 6 assists.
The Toronto Maple Leafs would capture the 1963 and 1964 Stanley Cup Championships, proving themselves to be a powerful team that decade.


For the 1966-67 season, the Toronto Maple Leafs made another appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals against the Montreal Canadiens. It was the final championship game played in the "Original Six" era and the youthful French-Canadian squad were the heavy favourites to beat their aging Canadian rivals. However, with a 10 point performance by Frank Mahovlich, the Leafs captured hockey's holy grail winning the series 4-2.


Midway through the 1967-68 season, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. In the 1970-71 season, he was shipped off to the Montreal Canadiens and win the Stanley Cup twice more. He then detracted to the World Hockey Association for four more years before retiring in 1978.


Frank Mahovlich represented Canada twice in his career. The first time was in the 1972 Summit Series against USSR registering 1 goal and 1 assist. He played in the second Summit Series in 1974 in a losing effort against the Soviet Union.

1181 games, 533 goals, 570 assists, Calder Trophy [1958], 6x Stanley Cup Champion [1962-64, 1967, 1971, 1973], 15x NHL All-Star [1959-74], 3x NHL First All-Star Team [1961, 1963, 1973], Hockey Hall of Fame inductee [1981], The Hockey News' 100 Greatest Players [#27].
On 3 October 2001, opening night of the regular season, the Toronto Maple Leafs organization honoured his #27.

Money well spent!

Eric Clapton x MTV Unplugged

Sorry for the lack of posts these past several weeks. With school and work and laziness and the holiday meshed together, you tend to forget things. These next few posts are just some gifts I was given by my family for my birthday/Christmas. Gift giving in over for me now that I'm way too old for that. But first up is a birthday gift my younger brother gave me. It's the Eric Clapton MTV Unplugged Deluxe album that came out not too long ago. An amazing artist with an amazing instrument recording some of the best songs of all time is a winner.

Green Day x American Idiot x Special Edition

The first of two Christmas presents my younger brother gave me was the special edition of Green Day's American Idiot. This was a rare one to find and I was surprised he grabbed a used copy for me at Sonic Boom. Not only was the album pretty sweet, but he threw in a gift card for that vintage record/movie warehouse.

1988 Slam Dunk Championship x Michael Jordan

The third gift he gave me is this framed vintage Nike poster of Michael Jordan from the 1988 Slam Dunk Championship. Still wrapped with the corners in cardboard, I really can't decidded on the a spot to hang this.

Buzz Lightyear: Space Ranger

My older brother gave this Toy Story Buzz Lightyear as a birthday gift, but decided to open it on Christmas so I wouldn't feel left out. This is definitely one of the best gifts I've ever had! I've always wanted this as a kid and, now that I'm old, finally own one.


A complete replica of what was presented in the 1995 film, this figure does exactly what the commercial says.

Picked this up a few weeks ago for half off and it matches so well with this Marcus Allen jersey.

Vans x Rowley Pro

The Rowley Pro shoes were originally sold between 1999-2007 and always wanted one since I first started skating. Fast forward 5 years later and these are back and better than before. Thankfully, Vans' Black Friday sale allowed me to scoop these up for a very good price and I can't wait to skate them.




I really wish I didn't lose the pic of Geoff Rowley and I, but I'm stoked I still have a Thrasher magazine signed by him.

Adidas x Mark Gonzales

Here's a pretty awesome Mark Gonzales tee I grabbed at the Black Friday sale at Adidas. Couldn't let this one go and I might go back to buy a pair of skate shoes as well.



I also purchased a nice recyclable tote bag for half off the original price tag. Now these, I'll get more of.

Philadelphia Phillies x Chase Utley [2003-15]

I know my blogging has been pretty scarce lately dealing with school and all, but at least my latest entry is about a jersey. This Philadelphia Philles Chase Utley uniform is something I completely forgot I owned and now that I found it - it's worth writing about.


I purchased this a while ago at a store closing sale and although the newer replica baseball jerseys aren't the best quality nor my favourite, you can never beat a good deal. This is the home white style the team wears with screen printed tackle twill numbers and letters on the front and back. Seeing how Chase Utley is still active in Major League Baseball, this entry will be very short.


Born in Pasadena, CA, Chase Utley was drafted 15th overall by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2000 Amateur Draft and made his professional debut in 2003. His first at-bat was a grand slam and became a permanent club member the next season solidifying the 2B position. In 2006, he made an appearance to his first All-Star Game and earned his first Silver Slugger Award.


In 2008, he helped the Phillies to their first World Series appearance since 1993. They ended up winning the Fall Classic 4-1 against the Tampa Bay Rays with Chase Utley hitting a low .168 with 2 home runs in that 5 game bout. But at the end of it all, he finally had the chance to hoist The Commissioner's Trophy in his tenth season in Philadelphia.


As of the 2013 MLB season, Chase Utley has 1,410 hits, 217 HR, 808 RBI, 129 SB, and a batting average of .287.

New York Giants x Willie Mays [1954]

Hello readers/collectors/sports fans, It's been a while since my last jersey entry. Here's something for the baseball addicts out there; it's a custom made New York Giants uniform, "The Say Hey Kid," Willy Mays. There's a little bit of a story behind this if you read further below. All in all, this is one player anyone should get.


I bought this a blank from a graphic design studio and since it's practically a costume, it draws some differences from the authentics. It was blank on the back and had it crested after the greatest Giants player of all time. The numbers are also off, no doubt - but the designer only had hockey team fonts. I confirmed to go forward this because it's the closest I could get to resembling the 1954 look.


To add some good measure, I picked up this New Era San Francisco Giants fitted and it matches really well. Wanting to represent both ends of his career on each coast, this seemed most appropriate.


Born Willie Howard Mays, Jr. on 6 May 1931 in Westfield, AL, he signed with the New York Giants in 1951 and helped the team advance to the World Series. At the the end of the year, he won the NL Rookie of The Year Award with a .274 BA, 68 RBI and 20 HR. He missed most of the 1952 and 1953 seasons due to his military involvement.


He would return to baseball before the 1954 season, what many consider to be his best year. He was voted into his first All-Star Game and a trip to the World Series where he would make one the most unbelievable plays of all time, now known as "The Catch," and eventually sweeping the Cleveland Indians. Batting a league leading .345 with 41 HR, he was names the NL Most Valuable Player.


When the franchised moved to San Francisco in 1958, so did Willie Mays. While playing on the west coast, he became the ninth player to hit four home runs in one game [1961] and help the Giants appear in the 1962 World Series. He earned his second MVP Award [1965] and collected his 600th home run in 1969. In 1970, he became a member of the 3000th hit club during a game against the Montreal. In 1972, he was traded to the New York Mets where they'd advance to the 1973 World Series. Game 7 of that series would be the last professional game he'd play in.
Upon retiring, his batting average was .302 with 660 HR and 1, 903 RBI. He currently holds the major league record of 7,095 outfield putouts.

Toronto Maple Leafs 2013-14 Home Opener

This passed Saturday, my buddy, Jesse, hooked me up with a ticket to my first Maple Leafs game at the Air Canada Centre and it was definitely one of the best experiences ever.

Great seats, great people, and to cap it all off; Toronto won 5-4 in the shoot out.
