Toronto Blue Jays Unveil 2012 Uniforms

Only a little over 5 hours ago, the Toronto Blue Jays organization unveiled their new look for the 2012 season. Heavily inspired by the classic uniforms, they'll continue to keep the tradition as well as their identity. In my opinion, I really like it and for those saying otherwise, I gurantee it'll grow on them.


I'm definitely tripping downtown to pick up a baseball cap. Hopefully they still have some in stock.

Toronto Maple Leafs x Doug Gilmour [1994-1997]

Hello fans and welcome to another post for Jersey Sunday. I know it's been a while, but time and cash don't go well together. On deck is a vintage Toronto Maple Leafs Doug Gilmour jersey by Starter. I know he had an extensive career with numerous hockey clubs, but I decided to focus on his career achievements and his playing days in Toronto.


I bought this jersey off the internet and improved it a little bit. The letters on the back were individually stitched on. So I removed them and sent it out for cresting job with a name plate and a "C" on the chest. Just as it was worn by the centerman in those primal years.

Born on 25 June 1963 in Kingston, Ontario, Douglas Gilmour [wearing #9 in the image above] played junior hockey for the Cornwall Royals of the QMJHL/OHL from 1980-83 winning back-to-back Memorial Cups [1980, 1981]. He would also win the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy as the league's leading scorer with 177 points [70 G, 107 A] as well as being named the Most Valuable Player in his final year.


Selected 134th overall in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues, Doug Gilmour made his professional debut for the 1983-84 season. After 5 seasons with the club, "Killer" tallied 354 points [149 G, 205 A] in 310 games played and making it to the playoffs every year.


After the 1987-88 season, Doug Gilmour was traded to the Calgary Flames. In four seasons, he scored 81 goals and assisted 214 times. He also set a league record during the 1988-89 season for the two fastest short-handed goals [4 second difference] and helped the Flames reach the Stanley Cup Finals. In game 6, leading the series 3-2 against the Montreal Canadiens, "Dougie" scored the game winning goal bringing Hockey's Holy Grail to Calgary for the first, and so far, only time.


In January 1992, the Toronto Maple Leafs conducted a trade bringing Doug Gilmour to his home province of Ontario and help them become top contenders of the Campbell Conference. He earned 49 points in Toronto for a total of 87 points [26 G, 61 A] that year.


His next full season with the Maple Leafs would be his most achieving one. Skating alongside team captain Wendel Clark, he helped Toronto make it to a memorable and controversial appearance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.


Toronto defeated the heavily favourited Detroit Red Wings in the first round and met the St. Louis Blues in the semi-finals. In a second overtime period of the first bout at Maple Leaf Gardens, Dougie scored what looked to be an impossible wraparound goal sealing the game and later, the series. Many fans consider it the best goal of his career.



The Campbell Conference Finals would match the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Los Angeles Kings. Taking a commanding 3-2 series lead over the Kings, Game 6 became one of the most talked about matches in hockey's history books. Doug Gilmour would succumb to a high stick courtesy of Wayne Gretzky in the overtime period. However, the penalty was never called. With the assistant captain out of the game for medical attention, The Great One would score the game winning goal a few moments later and even the series at 3-3.



Game 7 would be played at Maple Leaf Gardens, but much to the dismay of all Torontonians, the LA Kings would take out the home crowd with a score of 5-4 behind Wayne Gretzky's hat trick. It would be the closest Toronto would ever come to the finals since 1967.
At the end of the season, he set a team record for most points in a season with 127 [32 G, 95 A]. In the playoffs, he scored 10 G with 25 A for a total of 35 points.


Prior to the start of the 1993-94 season, Doug Gilmour was appointed as the new team captain. He would lead the Maple Leafs into the playoffs for the next 3 seasons, but not as close as he was in 1993. Unable to make it to the playoffs in 1997, he was traded away leaving a much loved legacy with "Canada's team."


Doug Gilmour bounced around to different cities for the next 8 seasons in the NHL. He'd have two year stints each with the New Jersey Devils, Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres, and Montreal Canadiens before playing one final game with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2002-03 season. In 1474/182 regular season/playoff games played, he scored 450/60 goals with 964/128 assists for a total of 1414/188 points.


Doug Gilmour played for Team Canada twice in his professional hockey days. The first was the gold medal winning club in the 1987 Canada Cup and the second at the 1990 World Championships where the red and white would come up short in the bronze medal contest.


Career Highlights and Achievements:
Stanley Cup Champion [1989], 2x NHL All-Star [1993, 1994], Frank J. Selke Award [1993], Hockey Hall of Fame inductee [2011], #93 honoured by Toronto Maple Leafs.

Thrasher x LRG x Up North Trip

This passed summer, the LRG team came down to Toronto and parts of eastern Ontario to hit up a whole bunch of spots and parks. Thrasher just released a highlight video of their Up North Trip and I have to say, they destroyed everything!


If you look in the background of Tommy Sandoval's manual on the box, you can see me [in the green jersey] next to my brother [holding the camera]. So stoked!

Organika Skateboards rider Walker Ryan released a video part celebrating his exit out of the amateur category and into the pro. This guy is just too unbelievable! Probably one of the best switch stances out there right now.

HBO's East of Main Street: Asians Aloud x Willy Santos

East of Main Street: Asians Aloud is an episodic documentary on the lives of Asian-Americans. One of the episodes was about Birdhouse pro skater and filipino native Willy Santos. This guy definitely got me into skating and I've always appreciated everything he has contributed to the Philippines and its culture.

Blind x Guy Mariano Reissue Deck

Back in 1992, Blind released a Guy Mariano pro model deck titled "Accidental Gun Death." At that time, this Marc McKee artwork definitely caused a lot of concern for parents and shop owners. Production was immediately stopped making it one of the rarest skateboards ever released. A mint condition original can go as high as $3000. Earlier this year, Blind reissued the deck, along with other well known graphics, to celebrate their 21st anniversary. It's even shaped exactly as it was back in the early 1990s. This was something I definitely wanted to own and I'm so glad Hammer had it on their sale wall.

Zephyr x Winnipeg Jets

I keep saying to myself, "This is my last snapback." But I'm obviously wrong because today is another entry for Snapback Saturday. On deck is my Winnipeg Jets cap by Zephyr - probably one of the most anticipated items to hit the shelves this season. Luckily I copped this at Pickering Pro Image's $19.99 snapback sale. Definitely check 'em out when you're in the area.


The new emblem is based on the logo of the Royal Canadian Air Force. As opposed to the team's old colours, they dawn steal blue, silver, white and red. A jet fighter covers a red maple leaf pointing north on a compass-like rim. Probably paying homage to the club's owners; True North Sports and Entertainment.


This two-tone cap sports white eyelets, a silver button, strap, and brim with kelly green on the bottom. The Zephyr "Z" logo is also embroidered on the side. Unlike their previous snapbacks, the brim is a little squared giving it a more legitimate vintage feel. I much prefer this shape instead of the rounded one, which is more approprite on fitteds.

Do You Feed [The Curry Song] is sung by F-cked Up's guitarist 10, 000 Marbles who is also featured in the music video alongside the band's bassist, Mustard Gas. You have to love their range of music styles. This looks like it was filmed in the Little India of the Gerrard-Coxwell area in Toronto.

Transworld x Modus Operandi

Transworld's Modus Operandi was the first skate video I've ever seen. Seeing how I didn't work, the only option was to download it. I was blown away by how it was put together and how amazing the skating is from the individual parts to the montages. If it's ever re-produced, I'm buying it in the blink of an eye. I encourage any skate fan to take half an hour out of their day and check it out. Below are the video parts in sequence exlcuding the slams. Enjoi!

New Era x Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

Welcome back to another entry of Fitted Friday where I show you one of my fitted caps every fifth day of the week. Today's item is my Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim [LA Angels for short] authentic by New Era. How I obtained this cap has an incredible story.


On the side of the cap is the 50th Ann'y emblem of the LA Angels. A pretty exclusive cap that is nowhere to be found in Toronto. Not even New Era Toronto carries these.


Here's how the story goes:
During the Blue Jays last home series and second last day of the homestand against the visiting LA Angels, a rep from the their clubhouse came by for Vernon Wells to grab his order of chicken wings. As he left, I asked the him if he'd be able to get me a cap in my size. He walked away joking he would - at least I thought he was. The next day, the rep returned and threw the hat in my direction. I was shocked how he lived up to his word. According to him, "it was all Vernon," and not only did I recieve a cap, but an autographed baseball by the outfielder as well.



It was an even greater day since the Toronto Blue Jays earned the W on the final home game of the season from Edwin Encarnacion's walk-off HR in the 12th. Much thanks to Vernon Wells and the clubhouse manager whom [forgive me] I'm blanking on the name.

Top 10 Goals of All Time

With the NHL season starting in just two days, I can't help but hold in the excitement. I'm that amped! With hockey on the mind, I thought this would be a neat thing to blog. Back in 2006, one of the league's best new stars scored one of the most amazing goals ever caught on tape. Days later, TSN compiled a list of the top 10 goals of all time. I'm guessing they went for the flashiest shots as opposed to the ones with actual meaning. Still a great video overall. Enjoi!

Top 10 Dunks of All Time

In 1999, the NBA season was shortened to 50 games due to an early lockout. For the first several months, the league still needed to entertain its fans and broadcasted a documentary showcasing the top 100 plays of all time [assists, blocks, etc.]. It was really a list for the top plays of the 20th century since the new millenium was upon us. Keep that in mind while watching this video so you don't ask yourself, "What about LeBron James?"
